Q: How can I check my DSL speed at home?

A: There are a lot of variables that come into play when testing broadband speeds, so it's important that you follow the three most important guidelines-

1. Always test directly through your modem. This means you should be plugged directly into your modem when running the speed test and not through a wireless network.

2. Close all applications and/or programs that may be running on your PC when you're ready to test.

3. Use the correct test site. Locally Internet is provided by more than one provider, and each of these sells you a distinctly different service. Internet access providers are responsible for the local loop (physical infrastructure) and Internet service providers for the virtual connection to the Internet. If in doubt, contact both for further details.
