Developer Bazarian still hopeful for resort

Developer Carl Bazarian

Developer Carl Bazarian may yet build a new Park Hyatt Resort on the former Club Med site in St George’s — in partnership with the potential investors behind the Premier’s controversial private jet trip to Washington DC.In an interview with The Royal Gazette, Premier Craig Cannonier said that Mr Bazarian had informed Government that he was in talks with the investor for financing.“He’s looking to revitalise the project down in the east and what has come to our knowledge is that he has sought out financing — he also was having difficulty getting a bridging loan — and I believe he has contacted the potential investors we had seen on the private jet some time ago.”This newspaper can now confirm the identity of the investor as Maryland, US, developer Nathan Landow, 81.Contacted in the Bahamas, where he has some business interests, Mr Landow confirmed that his group had been approached by Mr Bazarian in connection with the Club Med site.“We are interested and we heard Mr Bazarian and I think he has a very interesting plan for the development of the hotel,“ Mr Landow said.“And we will be meeting him again in the near future at which time we will explore the possibilities of a joint venture.”Mr Landow stressed that nothing had been finalised.“We did enjoy meeting with Mr Bazarian and he has very fine plans for the site. And we think it will be of benefit if he is allowed to proceed.”Efforts to contact Mr Bazarian were unsuccessful. But Mr Landow said that the discussion so far centred around either financing or a partnership.“But we haven’t gotten very far. All we are saying is we are interested.”Asked when a decision would be made, he said that the ball is now in Bermuda’s court.“Bermuda has to make a decision as to whether or not Mr Bazarian’s plan — as well as mine — has merit. There’s nothing we can do. We’ve presented a plan — which is preliminary, of course.“He has put the rest of his package together, he’s sent a letter expressing his interest and we are waiting for a response.”Contracted by the Progressive Labour Party Government to construct a new Park Hyatt Resort in 2008, Mr Bazarian was finally kicked off the job by the former PLP administration last December after the development was hit with a series of delays and appeared to be making no progress. In February, the new One Bermuda Alliance Government confirmed that it had no plans to invite Mr Bazarian back to the island to thrash out a new agreement.Instead, Government said it would get Parliament to repeal the Act which gave the developer a 262-year lease on the site, making the termination final. But in mid March, E Michael Jones, a representative for Mr Bazarian, said that the developer was still in talks with officials — and was hoping to meet with Government. On March 20, Premier Cannonier, Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell and Attorney General Mark Pettingill were flown to a five hour Washington DC meeting with Mr Landow and his associates in Mr Landow’s private jet. The trio stayed two nights at Mr Landow’s expense. The trip came to light two months later prompting harsh criticism from the Opposition Progressive Labour Party which said that Government had breached the Ministerial Code of Conduct by accepting the all expenses paid trip. But Government defended itself saying no code had been breached as no negotiations had taken place.Mr Cannonier told the House of Assembly in a personal explanation that a “wealthy individual” from Maryland had contacted him to request a meeting with a Government delegation to discuss a “variety of questions”.The meeting took place off Island because of logistical issues, he explained.Asked how his meeting with the Premier came about, Mr Landow said last night that he did not remember.A former Maryland Democratic Party Chairman, Nathan Landow made his initial millions in real estate, has some interests in gaming and appears to divide his time between the US and the Bahamas.
