UK-based Bermudians have been invited to a reception hosted by the operators of the Fairmont Southampton as recruitment efforts continue ahead of the anticipated opening of the hotel.

The event, organised in partnership with the Government’s London Office, was designed to offer attendees a “first look at the reimagined resort”, an understanding of plans for its next chapter and an insight into the roles needed to return the premises to full operation.

Hundreds of people were laid off when the hotel closed its doors for renovations in 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A $550 million redevelopment project continues, with the latest timeline suggesting that guests will start returning to the 593-room property in August.

The reopening of the hotel is backed by tax concessions expected to be in place for 15 years and a government guarantee of up to $75 million.

Bermudians based in the UK will have the chance to “meet key Fairmont Southampton leaders, introduce themselves ahead of broader recruitment efforts and gain a meaningful edge as hiring activity accelerates in the months ahead” at the session on May 7, the organisers said.

“This goes beyond an event — it’s about reconnecting with Bermudian talent abroad and showing them how they can play a role in what comes next,” Donna Harvey-Maybury, the resort’s director of people and culture, added.

Kimberley Durrant, the director of the London Office, said: “Part of our role is ensuring that Bermudians abroad remain connected to meaningful opportunities at home.

“We are proud to partner with Fairmont Southampton to open doors for those who may be considering a return and would encourage Bermudians in the United Kingdom to attend the recruitment drive.”

The organisers added: “The London event represents the first in a series of targeted engagement efforts, with additional international outreach under consideration as momentum builds towards the reopening.

“Attendance is limited. This is a ticketed event with complimentary entry and advance registration is required.”

The session — to include a panel talk, presentations and networking — will run from 6pm at The Savoy in London.
