Dill and DeGrilla in podium finishes
There was joy and pain for Bermuda’s athletes on the final day of the Carifta Games, with both Jeneko Place and Shaquille Dill experiencing polar opposite fortunes in Jamaica. For Dill it was a triumphant day, with the middle distance runner claiming a silver medal in the under-20 boys 800 metres in a time of one minute, 50.90 seconds less than a second behind winner Antonio Mascoll of Barbados.Dill’s elation could have also been Place’s, but for an error in the pre-race information given to the young sprinter. The stadium announcer, before Place’s 200m heat, informed spectators that the top two from each heat would automatically qualify for the final along with the next four fastest runners. This was incorrect, however, as Place came second in his heat and turned off the jets just short of the finish line, before realising that it was in fact the winner of each race, plus the four fastest runners, that would compete for top honours. Place placed 11th overall, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the final. JeQuan Symonds finished 14th in the same event.“We thought we had one of our athletes in the 200m finals in Jeneko as the announcer stated the first two in each heat go through to the final and Jeneko shot down at the last 20 metres as he was sitting in second place,” said Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson.“Then when the results came out we realised that it was the first place and the fastest four times that were to go through. That was unfortunate, as he really looked good in the race.“Shaquille also had a great run, and all in all I’m proud of this team.”Bruce DeGrilla jr. grabbed a silver in the under-17 boys long jump with a leap of 6.94 metres.Kyrah Scraders was unable to add to her opening day bronze, and could only manage fifth place in the under-17 girls 800m final in a time of two minutes, 19.53 seconds. Also competing yesterday were Victoria Clarke and Tyra Stovell in the under-17 girls 200m, with Clarke (24.78) claiming fifth place, while Stovell finished in 14th.Tristan Joynes (15.26) finished in seventh spot in the under-20 boys hurdles, while Kyle Webb and Shawnae Brangman finished 11th in the 200m under-17 boys and under-20 girls races respectively. Khianda Pearman-Watson competed in the under-20 high jump, finishing eighth with a leap of 1.60mThe medal haul for the three days was five, although Watson wasn’t too concerned about the podium finishes.“We had a good day ending with Bruce (DeGrilla) getting the silver,” continued Watson. “He led with a personal best of 6.94m until the last jump when the athlete from Bahamas jumped 7.02.“I was hoping that we could add to our medal tally today. Overall I’m very satisfied with our team and think this is a great building block for next year’s Carifta games in Bermuda.”Bermuda’s other medal winners at Carifta were Justin Donawa, bronze in the under-17 boys triple jump, Kyra Scraders, bronze in the under-17 1500m and Ashley Berry, silver in the girls under-20 3000m.Last year saw Bermuda win ten medals in the Cayman Islands, although this year many of those athletes were competing at the more competitive under-20 category, having moved up from the under-17 division.Next year’s Games will be held in Bermuda for the first time since 2004.Bermuda’s squad: Under-17 Girls 100m - Victoria Clarke, Taahira Butterfield 200m - Victoria Clarke, Tyra Stovell 400m - Tyra Stovell, Rachel Fox 800m - Kyrah Scraders 1500m - Kyrah Scraders, Quasshie Douglas 3000m - Zakiyyah Showers, Ashley Berry High jump - Khianda Pearman-Watson, Keizhari Knight 4X400m - Tyra Stovell, Rachel Fox, Azaire Smith, Victoria Clarke, Alt.
