Fiddick getting back into her stride

Runner Victoria Fiddick has regained her racing stride with a creditable fifth place overall in the Long Island Marathon 10K, where she clocked a time of 39 minutes and 29 seconds at the weekend. The Island runner, who had expressed disappointment a week earlier after running a relatively slow time in the RMS Construction 10K, in Bermuda, was three minutes quicker as she finished second woman in a race field of around 1,200.In the Long Island race she tracked the top three women for the first few miles, running about 10 or 15 seconds off the pace.“Then I thought they were coming back to me so I pushed and caught two of them. The winner was a 19-year-old from the Ukraine,” said Fiddick. In the closing stages of the 10K she was aware of the third-placed women chasing her hard, but she did enough to secure the runner-up spot among the women.“This was a real race where I had to think about where the other runners were all the time,” she added. The race was won overall by Demesse Cefara in 32.34, with first woman Petra Fasungova fourth overall in 38.45.Fiddick, who won the May 24 Half-Marathon in 2009, is looking to compete again in the Derby later this month. Earlier this year she ran one of her fastest half-marathons when she competed in New York City. Now, with a sub-40 10K under her belt, she said she felt in good shape for the upcoming race.
