Watford Bridge repairs may affect traffic
Repainting of a bridge in Sandys may affect traffic next month, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment said today.
The ministry said repainting of Watford Bridge — which will begin on September 8, weather permitting — is expected to extend the life span of the structure for another 20 years.
It will be done over a period of six to seven weeks.
The work follows a survey carried out in 2024 by engineers who recommended cleaning and repainting of the steel beams to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge.
The project will be carried out from the water using a barge and lifting equipment.
Both lanes of the bridge will remain fully open to vehicular traffic for the duration of the work although motorists were advised that they may experience occasional short delays during specific operations.
Marine traffic was advised to proceed with caution when passing beneath the bridge.
The ministry said temporary restrictions or short delays may be necessary while work is being conducted directly above active navigation channels.
It thanked the public for their patience and co-operation while the “essential maintenance” works are carried out to ensure the continued safety and service life of the bridge.
