Jamaica in crosshairs of possible hurricane

Barbados has been hit by a storm system, Matthew, which has developed into a tropical storm and is now headed for the region of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Matthew could strengthen into a hurricane over the coming days as it passes through the central Caribbean.

While the National Hurricane Centre advised that Matthew was “not expected” to become a hurricane over the next five days, the weather service AccuWeather suggested that a rough weekend could lie ahead for Jamaica as the storm turns north. Tentative models from the Bermuda Weather Service also have Matthew taking a sharp turn northward on Saturday morning as a Category 1 hurricane.

At present, Matthew is delivering 50 knot winds, gusting to 60 knots.

The advisory, as of noon today, does not rate TS Matthew as any threat to Bermuda at this time.
