A flight from Charlotte to Bermuda was forced to divert to John F Kennedy International Airport in New York on Tuesday night owing to stormy weather.

The American Airlines flight number AA855 was initially unable to land in Bermuda, but eventually arrived on the island from JFK at 10.41pm.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service, a gale warning was in effect early yesterday and a small craft warning is valid into tomorrow.

It was a windy and showery start to Wednesday after a stormy overnight, but conditions remained throughout the day.

High pressure from the west will gradually bring drier and less blustery weather.

However, a low passing to the island’s north was expected to introduce more wet and windy conditions later today, bringing the possibility of another gale developing into Friday morning.

The BWS forecast online said that today will include “some sunny periods with a few early showers”.

During the day and into tonight there will continue to be occasional gusty winds of up to 66mph.

High temperatures today are expected to be near 67F (19.44C).

Tonight was expected to be cloudy with winds northwesterly and moderate, easing light to moderate overnight, and backing west-southwesterly towards dawn.

There will be a “bright start” to Thursday but it will become cloudier at night as rain and showers develop.

BWS said winds will be “southwesterly light to moderate, soon backing south-southwesterly moderate, and increasing strong in the evening, then strong to gale force overnight and veering west-northwesterly towards dawn”.

Sunny periods are to develop on Friday after a couple of morning showers.

The prediction was for strong west-northwesterly winds, with higher gusts in morning showers, easing north-northwesterly and moderate to strong in the evening, then moderate overnight.

Saturday is expected to have a mix of sun and clouds with light to moderate winds.

The forecast for Sunday predicted sunny periods with showers developing and strong winds that will become moderate to strong overnight.
