Measuring your fitness success

What is your fitness goal? Weight loss is definitely not the only reason to start a fitness regime

What is in a number? One of the first questions we ask our clients when they walk into Alchemy is “What do you hope to achieve over the next few weeks and months?”

So many clients see weight loss as the ultimate goal. Although weight loss may be important for some clients, it definitely isn’t the only reason to start a fitness regime. It is easy to measure success in a number on the scale. We have all fallen guilty to counting the wrong number, that little number on the scale. We all have that magic number we think will make us happy, but it really never truly does. So which number should we be focusing on when starting out in the gym?

• The number of times you show up: count the times you get to the gym early in the morning when it is still dark outside and staying in bed seems like the most sane option. Coffee-deprived, bedhead, half asleep but you still show. You start with one class a week, slowly progressing to something every other day. Finally, you make fitness a part of your everyday routine.

• The number of reps in 60 seconds: give yourself some gym goals. Count how many reps you hope to push through in a minute. Doesn’t matter what the move is, count the reps! Each month, give yourself this simple fitness test, then work on these moves throughout the month. You will be absolutely shocked at how quickly you will progress. Even if you start with one push-up a minute, I promise you that you will be able to do more than one the next month.

• The number of weight: there is a big fear surrounding weight training with women — “I don’t want to get big and bulky”. This just won’t happen. “Bulking up” is very much intentional and won’t just happen if you start lifting weights. Lifting weight actually helps burn fat, increase flexibility and is even known to reduce depression. Again, keep track of the weight you are using for different moves and commit to increasing weight throughout your fitness journey. Some days it is hard to keep motivated, or want to push harder. On these days, it is good to know what you are capable of!

• Finally, count the number of times you make yourself proud!: I know it sounds cheesy, but you know exactly what I mean. Count every time you reach those personal goals, those inward smiles, those “I rock” moments. They keep you pushing to be better, stronger, happier. I promise you, those numbers mean so much more (and will make you way happier) than a silly number on a scale.
