Lead by example, parents

Passing on good habits: our fitness expert, Cassandra Matcham (Photograph by Amanda Thuell)

Some of my favourite moments working at Alchemy Fitness are watching clients’ children peer around the corner as their parents work out.

If you watch long enough, you will see them mimicking bicep curls with water bottles or trying out a burpee or a push-up.

Their faces light up as their parents work hard and refuse to give up even when it gets really tough. They are watching their superhero in action.

Recently, my father started his fitness journey by walking daily. I have been overwhelmed with feelings of that pride children experience watching their parents face their fears.

I even offered to join him on an evening walk, to which his response was: “I don’t think you could keep up.” (I think my father has forgotten what happened that time he told me I would never shave my head for St Baldrick’s.)

The last few months have been inspiring to watch as he pushes himself to walk longer distances, or faster.

Sometimes it is easier to be “too busy”. I’m not denying that parenthood is a full-time job; finding a spare moment to yourself can be a challenge but, if it’s at all possible, try not to fall into this trap. Your commitment to a healthy lifestyle won’t go unnoticed. I promise.

There might be days where you feel like you are being pulled from every angle. Take a breath, and remember why and who you are getting/staying healthy for.

Some days it won’t be perfect, but they rarely are, right?

Get your children involved in your regime. Bring them to your class, show them that you have activities that are important as well. Go to a park to work out with them! Teach them how to squat, run, push-up or practise yoga.

Squatting with a five-year-old on your back is harder than it seems!

When you make time for yourself and your health, you are more likely to keep to it, which again shows your kids how important it is to keep to a fitness regime.

Teaching your kids through action will show them how to find the time for themselves and fitness into adulthood. They are watching, even if you don’t think so.

Watching my dad get excited about walking has inspired me to keep pushing outside my comfort zone, even if that means being outwalked by him during the Middle-to-End.
