Embrace the plateaus

A positive feedback: fitness expert Dre Hinds writes that we should embrace the fact that a plateaus is a great mark of progress and steady upward climbing (Photograph submitted)

As often as I remind clients, it's easy to forget, but we must remember that the journey of fitness and wellness is not a linear path. So let's talk about it and embrace the fact that a plateaus is a great mark of progress and steady upward climbing.

As we climb towards our goals, remaining consistent with the plan we envision a linear path … perfection even. Consistent progress and visible results. And then it happens, we hit a the dreaded plateaus.

What if I told you that plateaus are not roadblocks but rather stepping stones towards growth and self-discovery?

What if I told you hitting that period of stalled progress, though frustrating, is an opportunity for growth?

The numbers on the scale aren't budging. The measuring tape numbers aren't changing.

The weight on the bar becomes heavy regardless of your efforts. I can see why you may feel disheartened and behind questioning your journey.

However, hidden beneath the surface of these plateaus lies an amazing treasure chest of lessons and opportunities for personal development. But where, Dre? OK. Let me explain.

Plateaus provide an opportunity to pause, reflect, and refine your approach. Take this time to evaluate your training routine, nutrition habits, and recovery strategies.

Are there areas that could use improvement? Use this period to make necessary adjustments and fine-tune your regimen for long-term success.

Be honest about your current approach and recognise where changes can be made, whether it means more rest days, different cardio options, more protein etc.

But it's so frustrating! Yes, I know. Especially if you don't recognise the positive feedback a plateau really is.

Navigating through plateaus builds mental resilience like no other aspect of your fitness journey.

It's easy to stay motivated when progress comes effortlessly, but it's during these stagnant periods that your mental fortitude is truly tested.

Embrace the challenge, stay focused, and remember that perseverance is key. Now, let's talk about that rude scale.

Scale victories are undoubtedly satisfying, whether your goal is weight gain or loss. When you hit a plateau in this area, it can encourage you to shift our focus towards non-scale victories.

Celebrate improvements in endurance, flexibility, or overall wellbeing. Remember that fitness is about more than just numbers on a scale – it's about feeling strong, healthy, and empowered.

In today's fast-paced world, patience is a virtue that is often overlooked.

Plateaus teach us the importance of patience and acceptance.

Embrace the journey, trust the process, and have faith in your abilities.

Remember that sustainable progress takes time, and every step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.

Take this challenge from me. Be encouraged with this last piece.

The next time you find yourself facing a plateau in your fitness journey, remember that it's not the end of the road – it's just a brief pause in your adventure.

Embrace the opportunity for growth, celebrate your achievements, and keep pushing forward with unwavering determination.

Plateaus are not obstacles to overcome; they are valuable milestones on the path to becoming the best version of yourself.

Keep striving, keep growing, and above all, keep believing in your ability to conquer any challenge that comes your way.

As usual, and especially during the plateau season, remain unapologetic about your fitness and wellness journey.

Be honest with your efforts and stay true to yourself.
