Chuck will stay at school until his art's content

If art is the bridge to a culture and its past, then artists are the visionaries who create the roads for generations to come.

Charles (Chuck) Morgan, 20, is one young artist to look for in the future.

Chuck, a former student of the Bermuda College is leaving for the College of Arts and Design in Novia Scotia this coming school year.

After he has completed his degree Chuck wants to start a career as an art teacher on the Island.

He explained: "As an art teacher I want to influence young people while also getting them to express themselves.'' He noted that in a small community like Bermuda: "Some people don't like when other people express themselves.'' "My art is simple.'' he said.

Recently Chuck sold two of his paintings after an exhibit at the Bermuda National Gallery, an opportunity which he was both thankful for and proud off.

"People paint white roofs and Bermuda scenery,'' he said. "I paint what I am feeling.

"We've got the greatest people in the world -- more people are artists than they think they are.'' And that is why Chuck has chosen this road. For the love of the form.

"It's not about selling, it's about the gratification,'' he said.

When it comes to the arts on the Island, Chuck believes that not enough emphasis is placed on creativity.

"It's hard. Bermuda is based too much on international business. Most schools are moving towards international business. It takes away from Bermuda. People are increasingly going into business. They aren't encouraged to keep that passion.'' Passion is something which is heavily associated with art. Many artists reach success in their work while others can spend years in obscurity.

And there in lies the common misconception which is associated with artists.

Chuck said: "You don't have to be a starving artist -- as long as you believe in that passion, you will find a way to make it happen.'' But Chuck is optimistic about the future of arts on the island.

"Bermuda College is starting to get a more comprehensive art programme,'' he said.

He also hopes that someday there will be a place to showcase the art work of students and young artists.

For the most part, he thinks his drive towards this career has come from the encouragement of his college art lecturer Dr. Charles Zuill.
