deadline for the annual Thanksgiving Essay Competition is Monday, November 9.

The winner receives the 1998 Tom Pettit Memorial Award -- a $3,000 grant.

Sponsored by the US Consul General and Inter Ocean Re Insurance, the award was established last year in memory of American journalist Tom Pettit -- an Emmy-winning NBC correspondent who lived briefly in Bermuda.

The essay contest winner will be asked to read their winning entry at the Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service on November 26 at the Anglican Cathedral.

Four additional prizes of $500 each will be awarded to the other finalists.

All entries must be received at the American Consulate, 16 Middle Road, Devonshire by November 9 at 4.30 p.m.
