Francis Patton students put spotlight on rainforest
concentrating on one topic -- the rainforest.
School principal Gloria Martin said teachers throughout the school's different years used the rainforest as a unifying theme for all the traditional subjects.
Teachers introduced rainforest elements into language exercises, history and geography classes, songs, plays, artwork -- even mathematical problems.
Through the exercises, the children learned of the biodiversity of animal and plant species and their dependence upon each other.
And they discovered how continued development of the surrounding areas threatened both the rainforest and the way of life of indigenous peoples living there.
The upper years also made a field trip to the Bermuda Bioligical Station to view video footage of the Jason IX Project in Peru. And next month some of the students will have the chance to visit a simulated rainforest environment in Washington.
The school's combined effort culminated in colourful display of artwork, projects, and plants in the assembly hall last week.
