Hannah Butler, a 17-year-old Berkeleyite, first heard about the programme from classmates who participated in Outward Bound the previous year.

She was selected along with 19 other students to participate in the Wales branch of the programme.

Hannah said she is most excited about being exposed to different people under challenging circumstances.

"I've only left Bermuda once in my life, and I think it's going to be a good experience to be around other people,'' said Hannah.

"The Outward Bound programme lasts for about three weeks, and we learn, survival skills, hiking, and abseiling.'' "When you meet people under those conditions, you interact with them in a way that causes you to really know where they're coming from,'' she added.

Hannah explained that although she likes physical activity, her schoolwork and church choir keep her too busy during the year.

The Hamilton Lions club selected Hannah, who is a member of the junior branch of the Lions (Leo Club), to receive $2,200 worth of sponsorship from the Ralph Ferguson Fund.

She is the first to benefit from the fund established on behalf of the late Lions member.
