Hats off to P.J.!
Young Observer salutes 13-year-old P.J. Thomas (right), who was called up to the Premier Division team of Western Stars and took five wickets for 12 runs, assuring Stars of victory.
P.J., who starts school at CedarBridge next week, was called up due to the unavailability of several key players and made the debut every cricketer dreams of.
Given the ball by skipper Arnold Manders when Cleveland were on 50-3, the right-arm spinner tore Cleveland's innings apart, helping to bowl them out for 123.
Then he was at the wicket with Andre (Doc) Manders, the player he admires most, when Stars reached victory. P.J. was on three while Manders had scored seven.
His bowling performance received raves rom skipper Arnold Manders, who discovered him at a cricket clinic at St. John's Field last summer.
"He really bowled well today. Cleveland were recovering when we brought him and it didn't take him long to break that fourth-wicket stand at all,'' said Manders.
Said P.J.: "I was pleased with my performance. I just hope that I get the chance to play much more cricket next season.''
