Local church camp makes a difference
other words Go Make A Difference.
This is the theme of the church's teen camp this year.
In some ways this camp is going mad. They are not like normal camps. For starters they spend an entire week at Port's Island.
They do not just sing songs and go to chapel all day, either. Swimming and arts and crafts are included in the fun. And some of its participants have come all the way from the US.
Phil and Carol Gelatt came from Indiana with a group of teen to help with the camp.
Mr. Gelatt has returned to this camp for the fourth time and each time he has brought special activities for the campers.
One game required campers to form tight circles and then slowly sit down on the lap of the person behind you. And then try to walk in that same position.
This activity showed how working as a team is a good advantage. One camper said she noticed that whenever one person from the group fell out they all did.
Mr. Gelatt showed the young lady and her peers that spiritually when one Christian friend falls we all feel the effect.
Students all listened attentively as Mr. Gelatt spoke.
"Learn to trust the Lord and live a life that pleases Him,'' he told them.
"Happiness will come with Jesus in your life.'' But the young people were not passive listeners. They all interacted with him.
The students asked questions about Christianity and God. Not a single question was left unanswered and each question was given a Bible-based response.
The fun did not stop there. Every afternoon each team had a "dare period'' in which one team would dare the other team to do something. For example, one team was dared to go to the sea and collect a mussel, boil it and eat it.
If the other team chose not to do it, the other team would get points. If the other team completed the gruesome task -- which they did, they would gain points.
"I love doing this so much.'' first-time counsellor Chad Edwards said. "Just being able to make a difference in someone else's life affects my life.'' For the past ten years Deanna and Mike Freison have organised the camp's programme. But this year they were joined by Heidi Maderios.
Ms Madeiros is doing a summer internship at her church and helping to organise the event was part of her requirement.
