MSA students plunge into something new

In a twist to the traditional school sports day, a group of 20 Mount Saint Agnes students descended upon the Nautilus Diving Centre in Southampton on June 5 for a day of diving and snorkelling.

Instead of a day races and competition, phys-ed teacher Martin Ford decided to do something different this year.

Students from grades five through eight were able to choose from a number of new activities designed to encourage group co-operation.

"I wanted to give the students a day of learning instead of telling them to just go and play,'' said Mr. Ford.

"All students were informed by instructors what to do before they did the activity,'' he added.

Other choices for the students were horseback riding, squash, golf, mountain biking, karate, dance, cricket, softball, orienteering and sailing.

A parent with the scuba group said: "The wealth of Bermuda's seas is one of the most important local resources and it's great that the students can have the experience and therefore have a greater understanding of the underwater environment.'' Wet behind the ears: Mount Saint Agnes students, (above and below) went snorkelling and diving with Nautilus Diving Service on June 5 for sport's day.

The students were given the chance to participate in their choice of activity from a list of alternative activities instead of competing in traditional track and field events.
