installation service for officers this month.

And the candlelight service, held on September 24, at the Southampton Seventh Day Adventist Church, was described as a "significant and sombre occasion''.

"It is a reminder to the student body that these officers were selected by them, and an indication of their faith and trust in them to serve for the new school year,'' development officer Frigga Simmons said.

"They understand that their service and accomplishments depend largely on their cooperation.'' This is clearly understood by Student Association president Kianna Simmons.

"In a way it came as a surprise,'' the 17-year-old said of being elected. "I was really excited. It is a great responsibility. I only hope I can live up to the challenge.'' The role requires Kianna to act as a liaison between students and staff.

"The president is somebody who will do them justice as a liaison between them and administration,'' she said.

"I will be planning school activities so that they can enjoy school throughout the year.'' Although Kianna and other officers were elected by the student body she explained that candidates also had to obtain the support of staff.

"If you want to be candidate you have to have students as well as three faculty members sign a petition,'' she explained.

"As these officers pledge their commitment to serve and lead, they recognise that it is a serious responsibility as well as a privilege to serve their fellow students,'' Mrs. Simmons added.

"In a world so desperate for faithful, efficient, effective and honest leaders, Bermuda Institute focuses their training on the principles of leadership, service and character development.'' Among the students installed were: The Student Association Officers, the Class Officers, the Prefects and National Honour Society Officers.

In addition to Kianna, Larenzo Ratteray was made vice president, Michael Faison is spiritual vice-president, and social vice president is Kimberly Foley.

Kianna explained that Kimberly will be responsible for planning social activities while Michael will plan the spiritual activities.

"Even though we are responsible for planning specific activities, we usually make the decisions in a big group,'' she added. "I think the Student Association is well balanced. We have an equal number of boys and girls represented.''
