RALLYING ROUND KOSOVO: Local schools donate toys, games to refugee children

IN the past few weeks a number of schools have been involved in the "aid for Kosovo'' appeal headed by Lucy Willitts.

Students at Gilbert Institute provided 75 to 100 shoe boxes filled with toiletries, games and toys for refugee children. These boxes were then placed in the containers Mrs. Willitts arranged to send to Yugoslavia.

Gilbert also raised funds through donations to help cover the cost of shipping the containers. A total of $347 was collected through student donations and $680 was donated by an employer of one of the children's parents.

AT West Pembroke Primary children added letters, notes and posters to their shoe boxes and a fully loaded six-seater van made three trips to Southside, St. David's -- where Mrs. Willitts has a storage facility -- to drop off the boxes.

Saltus Grammar school's efforts were spearheaded by the generosity of student Oliver Kempe who gave his birthday money, $603, to the Bermuda Red Cross' Kosovo appeal.

Other students at the school then raised money and donated several truck loads of clothes, toiletries, toys and food to the Medjugorje Peace Plan Group's containers.

STUDENTS at East End Primary, St. George's Preparatory, St. David's Primary, Mount St. Agnes Academy, and Warwick Academy also participated in the "shoe box'' appeal .

West End Primary's P6s, Heron Bay Primary, and St. George's Preparatory each held a grub day. At Heron Bay, students participating paid $2 to wear clothes of their choice and $400 was raised towards the shipping costs.

St. George's Preparatory also held a bake sale to raise funds to pay for the shipping.

Other schools advised that they were in the process of organising efforts to raise funds or provide clothing and other items for the people of Kosovo.
