massive Island-wide programme of community work.

And the youngsters brightened up the day for others, handing out flowers and fruit, as well as cleaning up beaches.

The 487 students from kindergarten to high school, took time to improve the school by cleaning up and touching up paint work.

Classes were divided and given different community projects.

Students took part in beautification activities, painting, and clean-ups.

Others fed the homeless and handed flowers to employees, bus drivers and passersby on Front Street. Students also handed out fruit baskets to employees at the Waste Management Centre in Pembroke.

Also on the agenda for the school's Community Outreach Day, held on March 30, were visits to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and they provided entertainment for the housebound and senior citizens.

Director of Development Frigga Simmons said: "Teachers and students alike returned to the campus with feelings of joy, excitement and a renewed commitment to continue their part in making Bermuda a wonderful place to live.

They are looking forward to the next community outreach day.'' The education at the Bermuda Institute is not just about the basics, but developing the students as whole individuals, she stressed. The mission and responsibility is to the students and the community.

Mrs. Simmons added: "The school received many positive comments about this activity, as the students touched many lives.'' Fruitful endeavours: Four classes of Bermuda Institute students celebrated their Community Outreach Day by taking flowers and fruit to the workers at the Marsh folly Dump in Devonshire.
