High school students could get the chance to sail on the vessel once completed as part of a leadership programme being planned by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.

Malcolm Kirkland outlined the project to a cross-section of students recently and got a positive response to the idea.

Students would spend a couple of days on the vessel -- to be built to the same design as a sloop from the 1700s -- as part of a scheme similar to the UK's Outward Bound project.

They would learn the rudiments of sailing and use the experience to develop their leadership and team building skills. In addition, there may be the chance for youngsters from the Co-ed facility to take part.
