Top prefects set the right example

Being head of the prefects at Elliott Primary School is not all fun and games for ten-year-olds Silvia Realejo and Trevon Talbot.

They both look at their roles as a big responsibility, something that they can be proud to say they have done.

"It's really great to be a role model,'' says Silvia. "I always wanted to be a head girl ever since I was in P3 (Primary 3).'' When teachers have to leave the classroom for lunch, a meeting, or an emergency, Silvia, Trevon and other prefects will go into the classes and watch the students.

"We go to the classes and stay with the kids,'' says Trevon. "We play games and when the teacher comes back we tell them who was behaving and who was not.

Sometimes the kids don't want me to go and I stay a little longer.'' Also Silvia helps out in the office, where she answers the phone and takes messages or faxes to teachers, so the secretary can have her lunch.

Trevon's favourite part about being a prefect is helping the students with their reading.

"When they're reading and they don't know a word, I go over and tell them to sound it out and break it down by syllable and they usually get it,'' he says.

But their jobs are not all fun and games. They also have to keep the students under control in the classroom and set a good example for their peers.

"Sometimes they don't co-operate,'' Silvia explains. "When I tell the teacher (that they were not listening) they make puppy faces and get all quiet and I feel sorry for them.'' With middle school looming just around the corner, Silvia and Trevon seem to be looking forward to moving on to bigger and brighter things.

"I think I'm one step ahead,'' Silvia says. "My career is coming and I'm starting to get my act together on how I want to be.'' "I'm proud of myself because I'm moving up and I'm proud of what I'm doing,'' adds Trevon.

Even though they are only ten, both students already know what they want to do when they finish school.

Silvia wants to teach either kindergarten or high school students. And Trevon did not even bat an eye when he said he wanted to be a mechanic.

According to both students the three qualities that make a good prefect or head boy and head girl, as the case may be, is to have pride, respect and confidence -- qualities that the two students definitely demonstrate.
