Certificate of Secondary Education exam worldwide.

And this week Saltus prefects Fiona Herring and Trevor Lietch were acknowledged by headmaster Trevor Rowell.

The GCSE exams are of British Standard and statistics show UK students to average a total of five passes of A to C.

Proving their "impressive'' academic abilities, both Fiona and Trevor surpassed these statistics by achieving ten passes, including nine A grades and five distinctions of A-plus each.

"These young people deserve our warmest praise and congratulations for academic excellence,'' Mr. Rowell said.

"The results verify that Trevor and Fiona are top-notch students,'' added Saltus Development director Daniel Blagg.

The headmaster also expressed his pleasure at the results earned by fifth-year students Emma Dakin and Bonnie Leibowitch.

Emma accomplished straight A grades in eleven subjects with three distinctions and Bonnie achieved eleven passes including eight A grades, two of which were distinctions.

Nine other students also received individual results of ten or more top grades.

"I am generally pleased with the school's overall statistics,'' said Mr.

Rowell.

This past summer, 58 Saltus students sat a combined total of 540 GCSE examinations. Ninety-seven percent of these pupils passed their respective exams with 63 percent earning passing grades of A through C.

All Saltus Senior School students pursue the GCSE curriculum and take their final exams in Year Five. They may continue their pre-university education at advanced levels by attending the Saltus Graduate Year.

Students at the SGY can choose between a career course or a more intense college course which concentrates on American Advanced Placement (AP) studies.

Mr. Rowell said: "Preparing young Bermudians for acceptance to college and for successful university experiences are among our chief goals.

"In the past few years the SGY classes have been typical in that all graduates who applied to universities were accepted. Some went to very fine institutions, including MIT, Brown, Yale, McGill and the University of Edinburgh.'' This year's SGY class is one of the largest in the school's history and consists of 65 students.
