Youngsters create a work of art

Youngsters, between the ages of five and 15, are taking part in a project to create a masterpiece in the new Discovery Room extension -- a tile wall of children's art work depicting their favourite animals.

So far close to 200 children have painted tiles. These will shortly be put in place and will create a "beautiful and lasting'' addition to the room, said the Aquarium's education officer Mary Winchell.

Bermuda Zoological Society have sponsored a student from each school to paint a tile and PTAs have sponsored other students.

Spice Valley Middle School's deputy principal Earl Hart sponsored ten of the most gifted artists at that school.

But Mrs. Winchell pointed out that the project was not just one for the gifted.

"We still have a lot more tiles to paint,'' she said.

The next tile painting dates are today from noon to 4 p.m. and on July 11 from noon to 4 p.m.

The tiles cost $20 and proceeds will go towards Discovery Room equipment.

"These children will be able to see their work for years to come,'' Mrs.

Winchell noted.

Those who would like to sponsor a child to paint a tile should contact Mrs.

Winchell on 293-2727.
