A great school fair with a long tradition
On Saturday October 18s, 2008, I visited the Mount Saint Agnes Academy 118th annual fair. The theme for this year's fair, held just outside the Mount Saint Agnes gymnasium, was "Around the World".
Each stall portrayed a different country and was decorated to fit that theme.
I was looking forward to seeing the vendors dressed to reflect the culture of the stall they were representing, but unfortunately that was not the case.
When I entered the fair, the first stall I came in contact with was filled with big balloons for sale.
They had different types of animated characters on them, for example, Spiderman, SpongeBob, Mickey Mouse, Mini Spread Racer and Harry Potter.
Supportive parents could be seen patronising the stalls and their children's curiosity.
It was early afternoon when I entered the fair and there were approximately 200 young children accompanied by their parents.
The kids there were enjoying themselves and playing games. According to the chief manager of the fair, the fair started back in the 1890s, and they have been very successful with the turnout of over 1,000 persons per year.
I interviewed Keana Tacklyn from Bermuda High School for Girls (BHS). She was one of the visitors of the fair, and she said that the fair was a nice, kid-friendly environment.
She explained that, "in the 12 o'clock hours it's more of a children's environment, but as it gets later on in the evening, the teen crowd comes out to have a good time".
The music selection was very appropriate for the children. They had different genres of music like R&B, Reggae and Rap.
They also had plenty of games and food and snack stalls.
They had popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, burgers, fries, hotdogs, sodas, water and ice cream in stalls located around the edges of the courtyard.
They had games like Roll-A-Ball, Wheel of Fortune, Globos, Plinko, Milk Can Toss, Fish Bowl Toss and Hit the Jackpot, just to name a few.
