A special afternoon watching Obama's inauguration

On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Dellwood Middle School staff and students were invited to the Liberty Theatre to witness an important event in history. This event was the inauguration of the first black president of the United States, Barack Obama.

Although the actual inaugural ceremony took place in Washington D.C. and the students would be watching it thousands of miles away inside this tiny Bermudian theatre, the excitement of being a part of such a historic occasion was felt through the entire crowd.

Everyone was appreciative of the invitation as students and teachers anticipated the making of history.

Barack Obama took the oath to become the forty-fourth president of the United States of America at 1 pm Bermuda time.

President Obama gave an intense and moving speech, assuring the world that he was up for the challenge and that change was on its way.

Dozens of famous entertainers delivered inspiring performances leading up to Obama's oath. Talents such as Aretha Franklin, who sang 'My Country 'Tis of Thee', wowed the crowd.

After Barack Obama took the presidential oath and was sworn in as President of the United States of America, Elizabeth Alexander, a creative poet, read a heartwarming poem.

Mrs. Musson, the principal of Dellwood Middle School who accepted the courteous invite from the theatre had this to say, "This was a historic event, an event that is marked around the world as a first. The highest democratic office of a country was held by someone of African decent."

This experience was unforgettable and it has changed many people's lives.
