Albert College student plans to pursue medical degree

Bermudian, Ashley Ming, studying at a prestigious Canadian boarding school has reaped accolades at her high school graduation.

Ashley, 17, was one of seven Bermudian students graduating from Albert College in Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

She is the daughter of Roydell Neverson and Alexander (Jerry) Ming.

Fifty-five graduates received their Ontario and Albert College diplomas.

The graduating class encompassed 37 boarding students representing 13 countries including Bermuda.

Proud parents, families and friends from around the world travelled to Belleville to celebrate their graduate's achievements.

Thirty-nine graduates received their diplomas as Ontario Scholars achieving an 80 percent average or above in six grade 12 subjects, one of which was Ashley.

Ashley has been a boarding student at Albert College for the past six years.

One of this year's graduating class agents, Ashley has been very involved in residential life and an integral member of numerous athletic teams during her time at the college.

Ashley sees her graduation as bitter sweet. She is proud of her accomplishments and is looking forward to attending University of Manchester where she will study medicine.

"I am sad to leave my second home and second family at Albert College," said Ashley.

When asked what she will miss the most about residential life, Ashley replied, "I think I will miss always having someone to talk to and hanging out with friends from around the world."

Ashley was the recipient of the Jesse B. Tuite Award for her contribution to residential life at Victoria Manor and the Parent Guild Scholarship for having shown significant personal growth and an increased understanding of the meaning of responsibility in and to the school community.

Forty-eight graduates will be attending university in the fall and six will attend community colleges, while one student is planning a gap year before continuing her postsecondary education.

All Bermudian graduates are planning to continue their postsecondary educations, four of which will remain in Ontario at the University of Toronto, Cambrian College, University of Guelph and Ryerson University.

"We are proud of our graduating class of which 100 percent plan to continue their postsecondary education at top academic institutions in Canada and Europe," said Head of School, Keith Stansfield after Saturday's ceremony.

International postsecondary locations include the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and the University of Manchester (United Kingdom).

The top Canadian universities include the University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, Queen's University, University of Waterloo, Simon Fraser University (British Columbia) and Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia) to name a few.

"Congratulations graduates," said Mr. Stansfield.

If you are interested in studying in Canada, the Frederick Sydney Smith scholarship is awarded to a number of Bermudian students every year to attend Albert College.
