Archbishop's visit was memorable

An adventure in faith: The Anglican Church's recent Faith Venture included a visit from Archbishop John Sentamu, seen with Youth Committee members Rachel Doughty and Sarai Hines and Margaret Sentamu.

The Anglican Church of Bermuda held one of the most memorable weekend events from October 3 to 5, 2009 to celebrate the Island's 400th anniversary. John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, and his wife Margaret joined the Anglican Church members and friends in various events from the Friday to the Sunday.

A main aim of the Archbishop's visit was to involve the youth from the Anglican churches in particular, and the Island in general, in a fun way so they would have an understanding of the theology of the church as well as an understanding of other things that the Archbishop was able to teach us.

I was lucky enough to meet the Archbishop personally on both the Saturday and Sunday. The Archbishop, who is originally from Uganda, is a lively and friendly character who, together with his wife, is very hospitable. Although I had first met him eight years ago, when I was just seven, he had remembered lots of things about me and my family.

At the Saturday event in the Arboretum a special Youth Zone tent was set up where various activities like scavenger hunts and quizzes took place and snow cones were on sale. The Archbishop and Mrs. Sentamu joined the youth for about half an hour when he spoke briefly to us and enjoyed watching the children as they answered a quiz about him and his life.

The whole weekend was an amazing event, and I personally enjoyed the event on the Saturday the best. It was a fun afternoon and evening for families, and everyone was welcome. Although stressful in moments, as I was on the youth committee, the event ran quite smoothly and was lots of fun for all, whether you were a church member or not.

The Archbishop of York was an amazing guest at this special celebration for and our mission, Faith Venture 2009.
