Celina and Stephanie: Ready for a new chapter in their lives

Friends and family: Cousins Stephanie Da Silva (left) and Celina Auraujo don't just share the same family roots and educational experience, but also responsibilies on the Mount Saint Agnes Academy student council. Celina is the 2010-11 President while Stephanie is acting as Vice President for the school year.

Mount Saint Agnes Student Council President Celina Araujo and Vice President Stephanie Da Silva are travelling on the same road towards success. Having spent their high school years together, both Stephanie and Celina have chosen Mount Saint Vincent University in Canada to follow their dreams.

Although these 17-year-old girls are headed in the same direction, at the end of their path Celina and Stephanie have chosen different careers. Stephanie, the vice president of the student council wishes to pursue a career as a French teacher.

When asked what courses she was taking, she answered, "Four years of French-based courses and two years of teaching courses".

On the other hand, Celina, the president of the student council is hoping to be a business manager. Celina said her course will be to stay and do two years at Bermuda College, and then she plans to transfer to Mount Saint Vincent to complete her education in business and general management.

When asked why she chose Mount Saint Vincent, Celina answered "I chose Mount Saint Vincent to further my education because it offers similar courses as Bermuda College and I wanted to take full advantage of what is offered on the Island. I want to study Business Management and it offers a very good programme."

Celina also stated that her favourite subject is psychology, which is the study of human behaviour which will help her since she wants to become business manager.

When asked how they got their position on the student council, Celina and explained, "In order to become the student council president you have to be in student council for two years or more. To be the vice president you must be in the student council for one year or more. Stephanie added, "We ask for the position and the student council writes the name on a slip of paper and then they count the votes."

When asked some of the other responsibilities, Stephanie and Celina agreed that, "When someone has an idea we have to open minded and not be biased, and we have to take the idea to the director". The student council also helps organise events for the seniors, the high school and sometimes the younger students. They have enjoyed being on the student council and say it's a lot of fun, especially when you get lots of feedback from people.

In the community, the girls are Sunday school teachers at St. Michael's and St. Anthony's. Stephanie is in the Youth Netprogramme, Catholic community development or CCD, and the National Honors Society. Some of the most influential people in Stephanie's life are her friends and family.

Although friends and family are important to Celina, her mother is the most influential person in her life. She said that her mom always listens to her and gives her good advice.

Celina thinks that some of the primary issues facing Bermuda's youth are an increase in violence and peer pressure. "People are almost afraid to be themselves without being influenced by someone else."

Some of the fun things Celina likes to do are, work on the school yearbook, CCD, singing, dancing, having fun and working out at the gym to keep fit. She also likes just laughing with friends.

With their faith, family and friends these two peas in a similar pod look set to make it a long way in their lifetime.
