Dance gives a sense of accomplishment

Niyokei Hassell

Dance can benefit a person in many different ways. It helps with fitness, provides emotional relaxation and offers a way to express yourself and your opinions.

Your fitness can be enhanced by dancing because you are constantly moving or stretching. Exercising doesn't have to be boring or hard work.

When you are dancing, you don't realise that you are actually exercising because you are having so much fun doing something that you love. It also contributes to more than just being slim, because when you are fit and your body is healthy and exercised, your brain functions better; therefore, it really helps when it comes to school work as well.

Every time you learn something new in dance or move up to a different level, you get a feeling of accomplishment and happiness. When you dance it gives you a way to relieve stress. It is really not too easy to explain, but you get that feeling of being free and graceful.

Dance gives you something to do when you're bored or idle. It occupies your mind and gives you a great hobby where you can always excel in doing something different. Juggling dance and school with social life does get a little tricky at times, but you need to just stop for a second and realise how to prioritise. If you concentrate only on schoolwork while in school, then you have no problem.

Do the homework with the closest due date first. That way you aren't trying to do all your homework at once and ending up staying up late because you got home really late from dance. There isn't really much of a problem with social life when you think about it, because if you are really serious about dance and you prioritise your time outside of dance as well, then there is no need to worry about it.

When you are not dancing, you will always find time for yourself, and if you keep your homework on a schedule that works for you, you may find more time to have fun and hang out with friends than you expected. Another problem that may arise while being a dancer is the time of year when exams are taking place. Most dance schools have their recitals around the time of examinations.

Dancers need their memory and rest in order to put on a great show for the audience and they also need it to take their exams. It is better to start revising for your exams ahead of time, (and this applies whether you are a dancer or not).

More time for revising will help you to remember more. This gives you a better chance of doing well in your exams. Along with revising ahead of time you should also find a little time to revise after the recital. Most recitals don't start until the evening, around 6 or 7 p.m. That gives you a good two hours or more to study for your exams and still have time to get ready for the recital.

So the life of a dancer comes down to prioritising your time and working hard. It may seem a little difficult in the beginning, but eventually you get used to it and learn to cope.
