'I like doing math in a fun way'

Cottage charm: As part of a P6 Maths project, Nya Heyliger of West End Primary designed a traditional white roofed cottage complete with a fence, numbered letter box and shade tree in the front garden.

The class of Vernette Sukdeo, Primary 6 teacher at West End Primary, recently concluded their Math topics of Measurement: Area and Perimeter with a project entitled "Let's Build a House."

The students were allowed to use any materials to build their houses.

There was a written component giving the measurements of the rooms as well as the area if they had carpet or the perimeter of possible fencing.

Eventually the students gave an oral presentation to their classmates and Principal, Mr. L. Tuzo, and answered questions posed about their projects.

Three students shared their experiences and feelings about the building process with Young Observer.

Letifah Smith explained that, "It took lots of time and patience but I loved making it. At the end it turned out beautiful. It took all day to finish my project but it was amazing."

She explained the process of building her house: "My father and I spray painted the dollhouse purple and white and that was really fun because it was a different experience.

"I used cardboard and it was flimsy so I had to make a base to hold the cardboard up. I enjoyed that part.

"When I was done building the house, I had to go to my auntie's house to get furniture and dolls to put in it.

"When my dad, my sisters and I got to the house, we looked at the toys to find the right items we needed. I found a couch, a tub, and some people to put in the house.

"When I got back home I glued them in. When I was done I put some pictures of Bermuda flowers on the walls and brought it to school."

Zahajrie Augustus was a little nervous to begin with, worrying "What if I messed up or scribbled when I was writing about my house? My mind just kept on repeating, what if, what if, what if?"

Though she felt, "There was fun and excitement through the whole experience because I never built a house before," the process was not easy.

Zahajrie admitted, "The boring part of the project was that my cousins were over and they were having fun, and I was sitting in the front room gluing and writing.

"They were screaming and shouting. I felt jealous, so I shouted out the window, 'Will you shut it. I'm working in here!'."

Jaylaka Jayathunga completed her project, which she described as "a great experience", in three days with help from her mother who helped with "most of the dangerous parts like using the hot glue gun, the knife work and some of the cutting, like cutting the carpet."

Jaylaka concluded, "This project was really fun and enjoyable. In class, we learned how to work out area, perimeter and about cubic units. "I like doing math in a fun way. I mostly like doing hands on things. I would really like to do another one any time."
