Library's Read Around The World continues
Imagine reading your way around the world!
Well the Bermuda Youth Library will be running a programme over the coming months that is designed to do just that.
The “Read Around the World” programme began last month and will continue on a monthly basis until May 12.
The first installment took children to The Philippines, and the next, which will be held on December 9, aims to offer a hint of Italian flavour into the mix, while in the New Year the young people will experience Portugal, on January 13.
On February 17 they will take a trip to India, and on March 17, they will sightsee at the pyramids of Egypt and also experience some of what the West African nation of Ghana has to offer.
The next stop on the map will take the youngsters in a south-westerly direction to Brazil on April 21, and on May 12 they will head north to Bermuda and look at the history of the Pequot Indians.
Bermuda National Library Youth Services librarian Marla Smith said the first installment was a huge success and she expects participating children will benefit greatly from the programme.
“The Bermuda community is made up of people from all around the world,” said Mrs. Smith.
“Each month travellers will get the opportunity to learn about a country and different cultural groups in Bermuda will make a presentation at the library about their culture, country, customs and food.
“Children will be encouraged to read more about the country through books and online databases.
“The Read Around the World programme aims to make children aware of, appreciate, respect and enjoy the diversity of life.
“We also hope that providing global education will help children to find their own place in the world community by accepting and enjoying the differences among people, seeking peaceable solutions to conflict, identifying common bonds and recognising many different points of view.”
Children aged seven to 12 are invited to head to the boarding gate, which is at the Bermuda Youth Library Auditorium, from 2 - 4 p.m. Forty tickets are available per trip.
Registration has begun for the December tour. Tickets, $5 are available from the Bermuda Youth Library.
