Maritime theme for first 'Super Saturday' at Masterworks

Delightful duo: Solomon (left) and Jonathan Simons provided light entertainment during the Masterworks Super Saturday on September 26.

Far from dampening play, Saturday morning's showers brought scores of parents and youngsters out of the rain and into the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art for arts and crafts with a watery – or more precisely, maritime – theme.

The first of the museum's Super Saturdays, September 26's activities included designing pirate pennants and using signal flags to create a graphic interpretation of your name.

In the members' lounge young people coloured nautical images, while in the classroom there were ornaments with a maritime theme to decorate that would fit perfectly into a Christmas card to granny and grandad overseas. The current artist in residence, Matthew Phinn was also on hand in the Rick Faries Gallery to offer insights into his work on display and the techniques he uses.

In the main gallery visitors were treated to a musical interlude performed by Jonathan and Solomon Simons, students at the Simons Music School. Nine-year-old guitarist Jonathan accompanied Solomon, who played a selection of short pieces on keyboard.

Snacks and light lunches were available for purchase from Corey Cross' coffee cart in the entrance courtyard, and will be there again for the October 31 and November 28 Super Saturdays.

Helping out were a number of teens looking to have fun while gaining community service hours. Al Seymour, in Year 2 at Sandys Secondary Middle School, was happy to help out with the family day "because I like art. I'm particularly interested in drawing."

Education Officer, Carrie Zenti noted, "Masterworks Super Saturdays were designed to provide an affordable, family-friendly event that introduces the museum to all ages ready to come along and expand their creativity and enjoy everything that Masterworks and the surrounding Botanical Gardens have to offer. With the help of countless volunteers, Masterworks aims to host a Super Saturday the last Saturday of each month!"

Youngsters are encouraged to bring their parents along to the next Super Saturday, which falls on Hallowe'en, to design a creative and spooky costume.

The Super Saturdays will continue on the last Saturday of every month. The admission price of $5 per person allows visitors to wander through all the galleries and to engage in as many different craft activities as they would like, and are suitable for children from toddlers to teens.
