Middle School pupils to be featured at Society of Arts

Lots of pots created by students at Dellwood Middle School will be on display in Studio C of the Bermuda Society of Arts as part of the Society's next show, opening tomorrow, May 21 at 5 p.m.

The works of approximately 35 students ranging from M1 to M3 include simple pots made by the students during art class.

Because of the nature of clay, the pots had to be created swiftly, during a single 60-minute art class, and this was the first time the students had worked with clay.

Art teacher Kimberley Tucker was "very impressed" by the students' work. "For a lot of them," she explained, "even the M3s, this is the first time they have done art since primary school.

"They have been very creative with their designs, especially given the time constraint." Some of the students have been working at the "functional skills" level, and they too have "done quite well", according to Ms Tucker.

"Some of their work is more daring because it's more abstract," she explained.

The students have also painted vases donated by Bermuda Clayworks in Dockyard.

Faces have been painted on the pre-formed vases, with the idea that foliage held by the vases will create an interesting array of hairstyles.

There will also be on display tiles painted in the theme of "Bermuda my home."

In addition to the once-weekly, timetabled art class, Dellwood students have the opportunity to attend a Ceramics Club on Saturday afternoons between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m.

This allows the students a longer time to work with clay.

Though only Dellwood students can participate in the club at the moment, there are plans to open it up to students from other schools in the near future.

The students welcome the public to view their work at the Bermuda Society of Arts, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Bring your pocketbooks, as some of the more enterprising students have their bowls for sale; you may be encouraging the career of the next Desmond Fountain.
