Remembering Ray
If he could have been here to see this, I think he might just about have cried. It was very truly respectful to honour that day Mr. Smith, our former Deputy Principal here at Dellwood Middle School.
He always talked about wanting our school to be such a desired school that it would be mentioned as one of the island's top schools.
Students and teachers spent most of the day picking up trash in our community, which to some may seem like a wasted school day because they may feel that we should have spent the day in class. However this was not a wasted day to us because we know that Mr. Smith was always trying to make a positive difference in our community.
It must have been quite a sight to see a whole group of Dellwood Middle School students out in the community with their teachers, wearing Ray Smith shirts, carrying trash bags and picking up trash wherever they saw it.
Personally, I think this idea was a great way for the Dellwood students to see exactly what our former Deputy Principal meant when he talked about making a difference in the community.
Despite the sore backs and worn faces from all of the work that was done, I think many students and teachers had a great time. We spent most of the day outdoors doing something positive in the community, and we also missed classes.
Even though Mr. Smith was not there physically, I know he was proud of us, and his spirit was there the whole time.
