Student leaders encourage peers to play a role in school community
Mount Saint Agnes Academy is a school that promotes school spirit, and to help do that the MSA student council encourages students to keep a positive attitude. Student council president Tiffany Sousa and vice president Tevin Darrell are always helping out around their school.
Some of the responsibilities of the MSA student council include putting on fundraisers and charity events and helping out in the school. The student council also strives to get students involved in the school community. The MSA student council president and vice president's responsibilities include attending different functions and keeping things in order. This includes things like collecting money for fundraisers, putting up posters around the school and assisting both teachers and students.
"I've been on the student council since Year Nine," said Tiffany. She explained that she ran for the position of student council president, because she believed it to be a great way to get involved in her school and to have a say in the way things run in her school community. Tiffany continued that in Year 10, she was on the executive student council as the historian. In Year 11, she was on the executive student council as a secretary, and now, in her final year, she has been elected the president of the student council. Vice-president Tevin said that he chose to run to be able to help his peers to become good students and to show pride in their school.
In addition to her responsibilities as student council president, Tiffany participates in a variety of community services including helping to coach MSA's middle school volleyball team, being part of YouthNews and mentoring for YouthNet, just to name a few. In addition, she has helped to raise money for an orphanage in Kenya. Tiffany said that she loves volleyball and football, and that her favorite football team is Manchester United.
Tevin also has diverse interests. His hobbies include basketball, swimming, football and even DJing. He also mentors for YouthNet, tutors, helps at the lunch wagon and is part of YouthNews.
Some of the goals for the student council this year are to help bring everyone together as a school and to make sure that everyone is satisfied and has a good year. According to Tevin and Tiffany, some of the most challenging things about being on the student council are trying to keep a positive attitude throughout the school community and getting everyone involved in school activities.
Tevin said that it was particularly hard to sacrifice weekends. Even though being the president and vice president of the student council can be difficult, it's obvious that these young people are ready to take on the challenges to help represent their school.
When asked what they believed were some of Mount Saint Agnes's most positive attributes, Tevin and Tiffany replied that MSA is good at fundraising, has a lot of school spirit, and that all the students are like one big family. "Everyone really cares for each other," said Tiffany.
In response to the question of what they think is the most pressing issue facing teens today, Tiffany and Tevin said that because there is so much peer pressure in our modern-day society, more and more teens are trying drugs and alcohol, and that because there is more violence on the Island, kids and teens are getting scared.
Tiffany and Tevin's advice to the young people of today is to get involved at your school and not to follow anyone's footsteps, but to aim to be better than they.
