Students introduce creativity to their uniform
Uniform and stylish are not usually found in the same sentence, but eight young ladies demonstrated that the two need not be mutually exclusive at a fashion show with a difference at Prospect Primary School on October 26.
The fashion show was part of a celebration of the new school year held at the school auditorium from 6.30-9 p.m., attended by scores of students from several schools. Primary and Middle School Year 1 students from across the Island were invited to give their school uniform a new twist and show off their creations. The only limitation was that their designs had to include a tie, which meant that one entry, though very charming, was ineligible for a prize. A total of nine young people from Primary 1 to Primary 6 entered, and a number of the entries showed considerable imagination.
Mini-skirts and white tailored shirts were the style favourite, denim the material of choice and white socks popular accessories. One outfit with pleated skirt, cropped vest and matching purse featured the blue plaid of Prospect Primary, the school letters emblazoned on the shoulder, while another in the same material incorporated a blue T-shirt for a more casual look. Bucking the trend, one young contestant wore a pink "balloon" skirt set off with a lemon yellow, patent leather belt. The lone male contestant sported a jaunty straw hat with a blue trim that matched his lunch box, perfect for hot summer days, but alas, tie-less, he was ineligible for a prize.
Prizes, donated by Stylebermuda.com, included gift certificates for shopping at Gibbons Company, book tokens from the Bermuda Bookstore and Crayola products. Judges Mia Chambray of Stylebermuda and Cha'Von Clarke, Prospect Primary PTA public relations officer, deemed all the entrants worthy of a prize.
The back to school celebration offered other activities for those with little interest in fashion, the PlayStation III competition proving most popular with the boys, the winner receiving a gift certificate from Leisure Time.
Over 30 students entered the dance competitions, one for girls and one for boys. The girl and boy finalists, Precious Hayward and RiCaija Simmons, then competed in a dance off, with RiCaija waltzing off with the first prize donated by Dub City Records.
