The importance of reading

Word magic: Gayon Burrows, Daniel Butler and Sahbatee Burch enjoy some reading time.

Reading is a process which includes demonstrating comprehension and showing evidence of interpretation of the text. Strategic readers extend their thinking when they evaluate what they have read by making critical, thoughtful judgments about the text. When strategic readers comprehend and interpret text, they apply prior knowledge and skills to perform tasks, revise text and to answer questions.

Readers who read regularly tend to read what interests them. Reading literary text encourages all students to do what good readers to and pursue themes, authors and genres that are of interest to them. Readers create justifiable critiques to appraise the text's effectiveness and quality. Therefore, the reader's perspective is valued in the process.

Reading is a skill that is demanded in the global society. It is therefore critical that students become proficient readers, not only to become literate, but also to meet increasing societal demands.

Thus, it is important to provide students with multiple opportunities for literacy development.

The Literacy Fair initiative is designed to assist parents, students and teachers in recognising and applying reading skills to facilitate comprehension, in developing vocabulary through the study of word structure and as a celebration of reading, writing, speaking and communicating.

The main objectives of the fair were to demonstrate varied approaches to literacy; promote ways for parents to support literacy in children; encourage and support learners, teachers and parents by building and sustaining ongoing conversation about literacy; exchange ideas and information among the literacy community at large.

As such, Whitney held its second Literacy Fair on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the school's Outerbridge Hall. Dozens of visitors enjoyed tables laden with books for all ages. Young visitors were treated to a fun castle and face painting. A good time was had by all.
