The Saltus Grammar School family says farewell to Nigel Kermode

So long, farewell: Students of Saltus Cavendish bid Headmaster Nigel Kermode goodbye at a special presentation on May 21.

For many, their memories of Saltus are intertwined with the friends they made at the school, the motto "Labor Omnia Vinct," and for the past 33 years they have also been related to Mr. Kermode.

He has had a very illustrious career at Saltus, working first as a teacher for 22 years while moonlighting as a school librarian before becoming Saltus' eighth Headmaster.

Beginning his reign as Headmaster in 1999, he began implementing a series of changes that would help Saltus to develop while keeping its reputation as a leader in academics internationally and locally.

Tradition is very important for Saltus, and Mr. Kermode has been successful in continuing to welcome new students to the school with the "First Day of Term Lesson", a newer tradition that still amuses many returning students while adding his own flair to Prize Giving ceremonies.

Additionally, he is highly involved with the Parent-Teacher Association and student life, one year volunteering to be dunked on the dunking stool to raise money for developments for the school. Another year he allowed himself to be kissed on the cheek for a scavenger hunt held in the annual Rag Week.

Not only does he volunteer his time for the PTA, he has also made a sizeable donation to the creation of the Gosling Center.

He is frequently involved in keeping Saltus moving forward academically, teaching both Philosophy and English over the years while also remaining involved in the arts- mainly theatre, having worked with BMDS (Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society).

He has worked most recently on "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" in 2006 as set painter, photographer and in the crew.

Additionally, he has perhaps most notably- directed a personal favourite of mine, "The Importance of Being Earnest," in 1990.

As a Headmaster, he is a brilliant orator who has put his talent to use both in the classroom and as a panel judge on a Spell Down Competition held in 2005.

Mr. Kermode is a Headmaster who has vested a sincere interest not only in the well-being of the Saltus Community but also the Bermudian community as a whole through his work in the arts, most particularly theatre.

He is often seen strolling the school grounds speaking to the students and getting their thoughts on the school and is a frequent reader of the Saltus Shaker webzine which reinforces his support of his student's endeavours.

As a former student so aptly put it on the website in February 2005: "I feel very lucky and fortunate about the education I received; I had some wonderful mentors.

"I didn't have an easy developmental process here, but I went through a superb educational process being able to look up to people like Nigel Kermode, headmaster of Saltus and English teacher, and one of the finest actors I've ever known,"

We thank Mr. Kermode for his 33 years of service to the Saltus Community and wish him well in his retirement and hope he enjoys his well-deserved rest.
