There are too many cars on Bermuda's roads
There are about 50,000 cars on the road in Bermuda and about 69,000 people living Bermuda. Everyone knows that there's an increasing number of cars on the roads, in fact the number of cars on the roads in Bermuda has increased by 10,000 cars in the past five years.
This, I feel, is an issue that needs to be addressed because it affects everyone in Bermuda and is having a major impact on people's daily lives, routines and the environment, and it is a problem that is not impossible to solve.
The increasing number of cars on the roads also affects the number of road collisions there are. On the week starting May 12, there were 60 road accidents recorded. That is an astonishing figure and in my opinion the number of cars on the roads contributes to this statistic.
In addition to road collisions, this also makes the traffic situation a lot worse especially in and around Hamilton. It is simply treacherous driving out of or into town during rush hour and it is getting worse by the day.
This not only applies around Hamilton; getting to school in the morning can sometimes also take considerably longer than usual if leaving at the most busy times. The roads simply aren't meant to have this many cars on them, they just aren't big enough to handle all the cars.
In addition the number of cars has a serious impact upon the environment in Bermuda. The amount of gas being burned by these cars gives off a considerable amount of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and many other harmful gasses; most of which are greenhouse gasses which contribute to global warming.
The amount of pollution given off also leaves a more local impression from the way cars are gotten rid of after they are no longer useable.
There are many ways to approach the problem but some of the solutions to the situation are to use modes of public transport instead, such as the bus or the ferry. Both come regularly and not too far apart, so you never have an extremely long wait. Both are reliable and the ferry in particular is very fast and saves a lot of time.
Motorcycles are another great alternative because they have many of the same conveniences of cars but are smaller, give off less pollution and are much more suitable for Bermuda's small, windy roads. Car pooling with friends or colleges is another great idea because a large amount of the cars on the roads have very few people in them and could easily fit in a couple more.
And there is always the option of riding a pedal bike or walking if your destination is fairly close. This is a good alternative because it is good for you and the environment.
Only if we are collectively responsible can we keep Bermuda beautiful. I happen to think it's worth it.
