Time to step up to the challenge
By Jasmyn Renfroe, Clearwater Middle School
The day of our prefect ceremony, we were all wondering who would be chosen as head boy, girl, deputy head boys, and girls. My heart was pounding as I entered the dark assembly hall and it felt like all eyes were on me.
As three other people and I walked on the stage to sit with our principal and guest speaker Mr. Durant, I felt the candle in my hand slowly heat up.
The voice of our choral music teacher Mr. Tuzo was heard all over the hall.
When we finally sat down I felt a little more relaxed, especially when our guest speaker came up to talk.
He was hilarious and had the whole assembly laughing.
Everything was fine until... Mrs. Francis-Smith came up to me and told me I was speaking next.
My heart raced as she announced: "Now we will have Jasmyn Renfroe read the role of the Prefect."
As I walked up to the podium to read, the only thing on my mind was getting it over and done with.
As I read I eventually forgot that there was an audience in front of me.
Before I knew it I was finished and walking down the steps to join the rest of the prefects below the stage.
One by one we walked up onto the stage to receive our prefect badges.
Then it was time to find out who were the deputies and heads. And the deputy head girls are: Dymond and Staesha. The deputy head boys are: Corey and Alleyne. My name wasn't called so I just hoped that I was head girl.
Then they announced, "The head boy of the 2009-2010 school year is: Jordan. The head girl of the 2009-2010 school year is Jasmyn."
As I walked on stage to receive my head girl pin I heard cheers from every direction.
I was proud of myself for achieving this but I knew that this meant that I had to really step up to this new challenge.
I am confident that I will fulfil my duties as head girl and I will grow as the year goes on.
