France trip was unforgettable

Bon voyage: the Saltus school trip to the Cote D’Azure, France in February included a visit to the Picasso Museum, a perfumery, a chocolate factory, a trip to Monaco and afternoon shopping in Nice.

The adventure began as soon as we boarded the British Airways flight to London Gatwick Airport. Everyone on the plane had fun, telling jokes, pulling pranks, sleeping, and watching new movies, my personal favorite being ‘Due Date’. Once we arrived in Gatwick, we took a coach to Heathrow Airport. At this point everyone was tired so we decided to look for something to eat before we boarded the two-hour flight from London to Nice, France. Now we were all feeling tired because when we landed in France at about 1.30pm local time, school here in Bermuda was only just beginning at 8.30am and we had only left the night before! We left Nice Airport on a coach, and drove a relatively short distance to Antibes, where we dropped off our luggage at the school that ran the programme La Centre International d’Antibes. We got a quick bite to eat at the cafeteria there, and took a nice walk through the town of Antibes. For those who don’t know, Antibes is one of the many towns located along the Cote d’Azur which is also called the ‘French Riviera’ located on the South-Eastern Mediterranean in France. It is a very popular tourist destination. On Saturday, we got to spend the morning with our host families. Dejon, Miles and I had a very elegant looking and kind host mother who was about 50, and a very cool host brother, her 20 year old son Damien. Her name is Liliane and she is an author. Her son Damien is a street acrobat and upcoming stuntman who is absolutely amazing at parkour and free running. He also has XBOX live!At lunchtime, we met with the rest of our school group and visited a fort and the Picasso Museum, afterwards we did a little bit of shopping in the local area. Once finished, we met up with our host families and went back home.Sunday was my favourite out of the entire trip. We got to visit Monaco all day, which was something I was looking forward to even before the trip. The wonderful thing about Monaco is that it’s an independent country inside of France and it is even smaller and wealthier than Bermuda and most importantly it is filled with SPORTS CARS! We must have seen about 100 of them in that one day alone. We also visited the Oceanography Museum and the Royal Palace of Monaco and the Monte Carlo Casino, which is the most famous casino in the world. On Monday we had a two-hour French class in the morning and then we visited Grasse to take a tour of the Fragonard Perfumery, where we were shown how perfume is made specially and got to buy some for ourselves or parents and friends. After that we found ourselves touring a candy and chocolate factory in the mountains of Grasse. We were also shown a quick tour of how chocolate and candy were specially made there, overall a delicious experience.Wednesday was our last full day in the country, and so we took the train to Nice. It is a very big and popular city in France, with a LOT of shops. We took an hour tour of the city and spent a least five hours shopping!Everyone was tired that night when we returned to our home stays to pack our bags and spend the night with our host families. Dejon, Miles and I spent the night in Damien’s room playing Call of Duty: Black Ops, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, and Test Drive. We took pictures with Damien and Liliane for memories and locked Miles on the balcony in 39 degree weather in his pajamas for about three minutes, luckily he wasn’t that mad at us once we let him back in.On Thursday we made an early dash to the airport at about 6.30am (1.30am BDA) and flew to Heathrow again. As usual we drove to Gatwick and waited for our flight to Bermuda. Before we started boarding, Okeema, Miles, and I noticed that Dejon dropped his boarding pass and didn’t realise it until he needed it. We decided to keep it until he started panicking and psyching out, by the way EVERYONE was in on it...even the teachers. Eventually we gave it back to him and we still tease him about it.The flight back to Bermuda was the most fun, as everyone was excited to be going back home. I know I definitely had a positive, enjoyable and educational experience out there. My language skills have improved greatly after two days and I’m trying to look into getting back over there eventually. I keep in contact regularly with Damien and his mom through Facebook and XBOX Live. I would like to thank Mrs Spicer for organising the trip on behalf of everybody who went. A thank you should also go out to Mrs Gibbons for putting up with me! It was fun and at times stressful, but an unforgettable experience for all of us.
