Use solar and wind power to our advantage

Dear Premier Cox,Recently, the world has been going through a recession. The gas price has gone up tremendously and there are large numbers of people who are unemployed throughout the world. Unfortunately, Bermuda has been affected by this economic stagnation. The Island has been going through tough times, owing to the decrease in the number of tourists and other factors. However, I want to ensure our financial future and this is how I suggest we help Bermuda stimulate the economy. We can use renewable resources for energy. This act can tremendously reduce the cost for electricity for people on the Island. Some of the renewable energy resources we can use are solar and wind power. Since our sub-tropical Island receives a lot of sunshine during the spring and summer seasons and sometimes in the autumn and winter as well, the use of solar power is an advantage. We can put solar panels up on our roofs; the solar panels can then tap the energy from the sun and generate electricity. This is a good way to reduce the cost of air conditioning and other appliances that make houses cool during the summer. A way in which we can use wind power is to put wind turbines in the ocean, which is usually windy. This resource can reduce the cost of electricity mostly all year round. This suggestion can help stimulate the economy by creating jobs. Bermuda needs someone to put up the solar panels and wind turbines. Is it really necessary to waste money on electrical appliances when we have renewable energy resources to generate electricity? The major component of Bermuda’s economy is tourism. We get nearly $40 million from this industry. Unfortunately, there was a decrease in the number of tourists this year. Therefore, we need to improve the number in order to stimulate the economy. We can do this by putting up ads about coming to Bermuda on the internet and being a lot friendlier than we already are to tourists. Moreover, the hotels should have international themes along with Bermudian ones. The purpose of this approach is to make tourists feel at home but at the same time introduce them to Bermuda. If we improve tourism in Bermuda, we will possibly improve the economy.Lastly, we can help the young people of Bermuda realise their ambitions and educate them based on what they want to be when they grow up. Nowadays we often hear that we need to bring guest workers to Bermuda because Bermudians are not qualified to fill a certain position. Consequently, that situation leaves many Bermudians jobless and in a position where they struggle for money. Therefore, we should educate the youth now so that in the future they will have jobs. Then, the government can stop paying foreigners and stop spending money for supporting single parents in Bermuda who need financial help. Educating young people makes a difference.Conspicuously, we can do something to stimulate the economy of Bermuda. For instance, we can use renewable energy resources to reduce the cost of our energy bill and we can improve tourism to get money from tourists. Furthermore, we can educate our young people so that they can contribute to the society in the future.Let us hope that Bermuda’s economy will be one of the best economies in the world.Yours sincerely,Shobhitha Balasubramaniam
