Open for business: Newly-renovated, the library at St George’s Preparatory School is a welcoming space for young readers.

Encouraged by Mrs Lodge, the St George’s Preparatory School principal, and inspired by the stellar work of the former deputy and school librarian Jenny Mancell, Michelle Wales undertook to renovate the St George’s Preparatory School library.“The aim is to make the library a central part of the school for learning and developing literacy skills,” she said. The library renovation has been a school community effort involving the trustees, in particular Ann Spurling, the PTA president Frances Betts, parents, teachers and children. The school felt very fortunate to have received donations for the library ranging from a leather sofa, carpeting from Stafford Flooring, books from the Altrusas and monetary donations from ZurichRe, the trustees and the PTA.The grand opening took place on May 4 with Permanent Secretary Warren Jones and Laverne Simons, Assistant Director of Schools, in attendance. The opening of the library was combined with a splendid, old-fashioned afternoon tea for grandparents. The event took place under beautiful, bright, sunny skies showcasing the St George’s Preparatory choir, which had just returned from ‘America Sings’.The dignitaries, grandparents and invited guests took great pleasure in viewing the new space and the children were re-enthused about using the space. The delightful new colourful library entrance was painted by graphic artist Claire de Ste Croix and features the winning designs from Tianna Mullan.
