Recounting our lives in stories

Authors of their own story: Primary 1 and Primary 2 students of East End Primary celebrated their potential as young writers at a recent reception attended by parents, friends and members of the community.

Ms DuBois read a recount story to us in our class called, ‘When I was Little’ by Jamie Lee Curtis. She taught us what a recount was. A recount is a story that retells something that happened in your life. It happens in the past and it is filled with words like ‘I’ and ‘we’ these are called pronouns. We started making a plan to write our own recounts of when we were little. First, we used story maps so that we could get our ideas down on paper. Then Mrs Pitcher gave us pieces of cut out paper with words on it that we could use to help us with our story. After we had finished our drafts, Ms DuBois checked them over and we wrote them neatly on paper with no mistakes!Mrs Pitcher put our pages together with a cover to make a book. Then we illustrated them. Last week we had an Author Celebration. We invited our parents, family members and people from the community to our school to hear us read. We had cupcakes and juice for dessert.
