Media magic: Media studies student Edward Stovell turned used detetion boredom ias the inspiration for his first film.

This year, as a CBA S4 student, I took a Media Communications class which involves television, radio, Internet and film, and CBA’s first-ever Film Festival 2012 entitled ‘Student Interests’. I have always enjoyed watching movies but in this class, I had the opportunity to be on the inside, starting with an idea and actually creating a film from it. I was the producer and director of my own films.I felt excited to finally have this chance, but I found that creating a film is much tougher than I expected it to be. Finding an idea is probably the hardest thing to do. I had different stories in my head and could not decide which one to use. Then, one day I was in detention and I was so bored that I thought I was going to be there forever. That’s when I got my idea for ‘The Door’, a film about a young man who is stuck in detention. With the help of my teacher, Mr Gallie, I learned how to create special effects for this film.It was easier filming my second film, ‘Blue Ink and Red Book’. I took more creative risks with telling the story and learned about the importance of matching the music with what is happening in the story. In this film, I worked with other actors and with editors, and this helped me develop patience as well as my technical skills. The Film Festival is a very good idea because it shows what CedarBridge Academy has to offer and it also shows CBA student talent. The Festival included films from 23 filmmakers; three films were mine. Viewers enjoyed my films which makes me happy.I have already started my own company, “Evermore” with three other students, Diogo DeMelo, Dwayne Robinson and Shaquille Young. We plan to make more movies this summer and I’d love to enter one in the Bermuda Film Festival. I’d like to go to film school, either in the US or UK. I am still searching but I feel more confident because I have a plan for my life, and this is all because of one Media class I took at CedarBridge Academy.
