Rugby players show heart

Sunday, May 6, was the day that every school in Bermuda had been waiting for. On that day the first ever Bermuda Schools Rugby Championship was held in the north field of National Stadium. Many schools had trained tremendously hard and given long hours to come to this point. The entire day of the championship was successful, and everyone, from the primary schools to the high schools, was impressive. I played for CedarBridge Academy and as team captain; I think we did an excellent job making it to the finals. It was not easy, mainly because everyone on our team was brand new to the game. This was CedarBridge's first time ever playing rugby at such a high standard to represent our school. In preparation, we trained twice per week for two and one half hours each time. It was meant to improve strength and understanding of the game. We also had mini-games between ourselves and other schools, leading up to the championship. On the actual day, two games were played. CedarBridge defeated Saltus 3-2 to get the “win” but it didn't stop there. The winning points came in the last seconds of the game. Our hungry opponents, Berkeley were just not giving up; they gave CedarBridge a tough game in the finals with CedarBridge holding them back from our try zone. Berkeley found a way to break our wall down and came out with a score making it 1-0.I have never seen a group of young guys put their hearts into the game like this one. Even though CedarBridge was down, we did not give up. When behind, good players strive for more, and that's exactly what we did. Although we didn't come out on top, we came out happy knowing that we did our best and we gave our all. I congratulate all of those who played on May 6, and I hope our players keep it up and we see them next year.
