Chapman hoping to make grade with Wimbledon

Judah Chapman has signed a two-year deal with English League Two club AFC Wimbledon

Judah Chapman has moved a step closer to realising a dream of playing professional football. The teenaged Bermudian footballer has successfully completed trials with AFC Wimbledon and is currently making positive strides playing for the English League Two club’s youth academy.Chapman, whose sister Asante has been accepted into the Elite Surrey Netball Academy, inked a two-year deal last month to become the latest local footballer to be signed by a League Two club behind compatriots Nahki Wells, Freddy Hall and Jonte Smith.Prior to joining the Dons the promising attacking midfielder played for Elm Groove in the Sunday Surrey Youth League and also attended the Chelsea Elite Invitational Development Centre weekly. The former Wolves youth player moved to London, England four-years ago after being offered trials with Fulham’s Development Centre.Chapman, who turns 14 in October, returned home last week to take part in the Clyde Best Invitational Tournament at the National Sports Centre (NSC) for the National Academy. The ex-Elliott Primary School student reckons being in a more competitive environment at Wimbledon will help to take his game to the next level.“I am very excited to be at Wimbledon because this is a League Two club which is above anything I’ve done before, so it’s good for me to be there,” Chapman told The Royal Gazette. “The level of football that is played is higher than all of the teams I’ve played for before.”Chapman has already made his presence felt at academy level where he has banged in eight goals so far, including a brace against Hall’s Northampton Town. He also hit the backof the net against Shaun Goater’s former club, Southend United, and Gillingham to keep the coaching staff happy.Judging by his performances to date, the budding footballer appears to have made a seamless transition to life at his new club.“The team is very friendly and I am playing in my new environment quite well,” he said.Rather than just make up the numbers, Chapman has big ambitions at Wimbledon.“I want to be one of the top players in the team, so I am just striving to be my best,” he said. “I want to take my game to the next level because I do have hopes of becoming a professional.”Chapman says adjusting to the English game has come with its share of challenges.“It has been a big adjustment for me playing over here because they play a different type of football and the teams are much harder,” he said. “But I think it’s better playing in the cooler conditions over here because it’s very hot and humid in Bermuda and I get tired easily in those conditions.“I think playing in the cooler conditions actually helps me.”And so does Wells’ meteoric ascent at Bradford City which continues to inspire Chapman.“Nahki is one of my favourite players in the League two because he’s scored a lot of goals (11) which inspires me,” the promising footballer said. “He makes me want to be just as good as he is. I am just so excited to be with a League Two club where I hope to do my best.”
