Harbutt holds off Mayho

Adam Harbutt, of Team Madison, held his nerve to beat a competitive field in the Winner’s Edge road race at Prospect yesterday.

He held off team-mate Dominique Mayho and Shannon Lawrence, of Team Tokio, to win the men’s A division. Mayho and Lawrence came second and third.

Harbutt created an opportunity to break away from his rivals halfway through the 80-kilometre race when he charged up Palmetto Road Hill.

As the trio worked to lengthen their advantage over the peloton, Lawrence lost contact with the leaders but was able to hold off the chasing group to finish third.

In the Adult B race, teenagers Christian Oatley and Tyler Smith broke clear near the Bermuda Squash Racquets Club along with Seamus Fearon and Adam Hopkin on the fifth of eight laps.

The foursome quickly stretched their lead but began to falter on the final lap, with Smith the first to be caught by the peloton just before Flatts.

Oatley was the last to surrender to the chasing pack as he was caught with less than 200 metres to go.

Fearon recovered enough to take the victory ahead of Mark Brown and Daren Dowling.

Adult C class honours went to Dirk Hasselkiss with his Tokio team-mate, Peter Crayford, in second and Charles Swart, of Fast Forward Bicycle Works, in third.

Laurie Orchard won the women’s division ahead of Penelope Butterfield and Wenda Roberts.

Somersfield student Robin Horsfield won the junior A division, with Alex Pilgrim and RaJul Matthie-Shakir finishing second and third.

Malil Joell, Nahje Smith and Nicholas Pilgrim took the honours in junior B categories, while Alexander Southern, Ross Cooper and Adrian McPhee were the top finishers in the respective Junior C divisions.
